Our property, acquired September 2006, is located on the southernmost
point of the “commercial finger” at Lake Hood Seaplane Base. This
site is optimal to serve our membership, strategically located in the heart
of the largest seaplane base in the world.
Although perfectly located, the existing structure is only 1,100 square
feet and lacks plumbing and insulation. This makes it difficult to operate
during the winter and to serve our membership adequately.
Initial plans to upgrade the Pan-Adobe style structure were quickly found
to be uneconomical.
- Perfectly located
- Accommodates 100
- Private/Neutral site for meetings
- Pilot Information Clearinghouse
- Events/Parties/Memorials
- Community Center
- Proud History / Timeless Design
- Member Dock Rentals
The new building would double our space, accommodate 100 people
and provide a world-class site for events and meetings. A conference
room, kitchen, fireplace, archive and three administrative offices are also
included in the plan. We will serve as an information clearinghouse for
members and transient pilots alike. Most importantly, this one-of-a-kind
Alaskan structure will solidify the Airmen’s foothold in Alaska’s aviation
community and give us a home to serve our members for decades.
The Alaska Airmen’s Association is financially strong, we operate solely on
funds raised from memberships, an annual airplane raffle and trade show.
The new facility will also be a source of revenue through special event
rental and dock space fees.
A design/build committee has been involved since the building’s
conception. Members include Steve Pannone (an engineer); CB Brady
(a general contractor); Jeff Wilson (an architect); Joe Pearson (Airmen’s
president); and Lew Dennis (Airmen’s board member). Mr. Pannone is the
point of contact for this team. Dee Hanson, Airmen’s executive director, is
the point of contact for fundraising and administration of the campaign.
The projected cost of the project is $500,000. We have applied for grants
but still need to raise funds from our membership in order to qualify.
With your help we can secure permits, finalize design plans and
foundation surveys in time for groundbreaking in May of 2008!
The countdown is on!
Please consider a one-time tax deductible donation.
Our fundraising deadline is December 31st, 2007.
